The Mecca bingo hall in the UK has made it a point to try and approach a younger crowd with their new bingo events and according to the participants, they are succeeding beyond what might have been first hoped for. With the latest offering being a night time glow in the dark raved theme bingo experience, Mecca hopes to continue to pull in younger, primarily female, players. The style of play is being called binglo for its reliance on glow in the dark materials such as pens to mark the bingo cards and glowing bingo balls in a variety of different colors. Even the callers come dressed for the occasion in wildly colored suits that also glow profusely in the black lit environment. The callers and many of the players wear glow sticks in their hair, as well. To add to the fun, the balls’ numbers are called out with a rhyming scheme to them such as 47, stairway to heaven or other ways to help players remember the numbers.

Gaming halls have had to go out of their way to really attract a younger audience after several social changes that have meant the older crowd is starting to fade away from the halls. This decline in the bingo sector for the traditional audiences has meant an increased push for younger players who are now getting into the excitement of the bingo halls on their own terms. Events like this one put on by the Mecca mean a big increase in younger players and that is crucial for the bingo industry as a whole.
